Biographical Note
Dr. Mohammed Moniruzzaman Khan has been involved in academia andresearch in the areas of disaster, gender, environment, climate change,globalization, women empowerment, development of agency, consumption, socialexclusion, indigenous community and other areas of social development andsocial sciences since late nineties. In2022, he joined as Associate Professorat IDMVS. Prior to this, he joined as lecturer in the Department ofSociology in 2008 and got promoted as Assistant Professor, Associate Professorand Professor with and for excellence in academia and research in 2010, 20016and 2020 consecutively in the same department. Dr.Mohammed Moniruzzaman Khan has over 20 years of experience in conductingresearch and consultancy work with national and international non-government organizationin the areas of disaster, gender, environment, climate change, womenempowerment, development of agency, minority, marginal group, indigenouscommunity etc. After obtaining BSS and MSS in Sociology from the University ofDhaka Dr. Khan has achieved his 2nd Masters (Master of Science) Degree from London School of Economics and Political science(LSE), London, UK. Dr Khan’s PhD from the University Canterbury, New Zealand on ‘Disaster andWomen: The Wave of Change in the Position and Status of Women in the CoastalBangladesh’ is one of the pioneering Ph.D research in the contextof disaster prone coastal Bangladesh. In the Ph.D dissertation Dr Khandisplayed his expertise of using multiple research tools and techniques via methodological triangulation tobuild nexus between and among various socio-cultural factors which has beenhighly appreciated by the reviewers and examiners. This unique piece of work further developedand enriched his research, academic and professional experience and knowledgewhich has been published on November, 2022 as book titled ‘Disaster and Gender in Coastal Bangladesh:Transformation of Women’s Roles in Reducing Disaster Risk and Vulnerability’from SpringerNature: Singapore. In this book Dr. Khan focuses discourse of disaster and women in the existingsocio-cultural settings and state of disaster related affairs in coastalBangladesh. Focusing on women’s experiences ofcoastal Bangladesh during disaster-related time periods being confined withgender-related identity for institutional local practices, unequal distribution, and lack ofaccess/entitlements to resources, role of GOs and NGOs etc. thisbook unearthed various issuesranging from disproportionate vulnerability, coping and adaptation mechanismsfor women, limitations for promoting participation and involvement of women inthe decision making process both in family and society. Also a very recent (2023) book ofDr. Khan titled ‘Coastal Disaster Risk Management in Bangladesh: Vulnerability andResilience’ published from Routledge: London addressesdisaster and disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices, constraints and capacityin the context of coastal Bangladesh. The in-depth study via methodologicaltriangulation not only in these two books rather in different research project,evaluation of the projects, assessment of the project and consultancy withgovernment and non-government organization for last more than 20 years made MrKhan very efficient and flawless in social research.
